What is a toddler pillow?

A toddler pillow is a pillow that is just the right size to perfectly fit your toddler’s head and bed. It is made to be the perfect size and thickness so your toddler can sleep comfortably throughout the night without any problems.

Your toddler’s pillow will usually be a firm pillow and will provide the perfect amount of neck support.

Why Should I Buy an Organic Toddler Pillow?

Choosing an organic toddler pillow for your toddler is really important. A high quality, organic toddler pillow will be made from safe and natural materials that you can feel good about your little one laying their head on all night long. Any materials used to make the pillow will be inhaled by your little one all night long, as well as absorbed through their delicate skin.

Certified organic pillows are guaranteed to be free from any harmful chemicals, that can have a negative impact on your child’s health.

How Do you Know if Your Toddler Pillow is Actually Organic?

There are many many companies out there that claim to be selling pillows made from organic materials. But how do you know if they are actually made from the high quality organic materials that you want your child to be sleeping on?

There is only one way to know for sure and that is to look for the certifications that your pillow carries with it. The most important one and the only one that I would accept for a pillow would be a Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) Certification, as well as a Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certification for the latex portion of the pillows.

A GOTS certification guarantees that every part of your toddler’s pillow has met all of the requirements necessary to become certified. However, there are a few important points to be aware of:

  • Greenwashing is a thing to definitely be aware of. Even if your pillow claims to be GOTS certified be sure to check all of the materials used to make that pillow. Oftentimes, the pillow can be made from a certified organic cotton cover but the filling of the pillow is not GOTS certified. For example, a polyester-filled pillow would not technically be organic but the company can still claim it is GOTS certified because the cover met the requirements.
  • Just because a pillow claims to be organic does not mean that it actually is. Always check for an organic certification!
  • Before you purchase your toddler’s pillow you can easily check the company out on the Global Organic Textiles Website to be sure that they are in fact certified.
But don’t worry every toddler pillow that I have included on this list is absolutely GOTS certified and has been verified by me.

What Toxic Chemicals Should be Avoided?

A traditional pillow contains many harmful substances that are not healthy to be sleeping on all night long. If you o not specifically purchase a certified organic pillow you should assume that your toddler’s pillow contains some if not all of the following toxic substances.

  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): These toxic chemicals are released when synthetic materials offgas. Conventional toddler pillows made from synthetic foams such as memory foam will release chemicals such as formaldehyde and benzene for the life of the pillow.
  • Flame Retardants: Flame retardants are guaranteed to be in conventional pillows, especially ones that contain highly flammable synthetic materials.1 Flame retardants are easily absorbed through the skin and are released into your home and accumulate in the dust. They have many negative health effects, such as neurological issues, certain cancers, adverse effects on the immune system, and reproductive issues. They can also cause damaging effects on the development of fetuses and children.2
  • Pesticides: If you are not choosing pillows made from organic materials, especially a cotton pillow cover, then your child will be laying their face and head directly on materials treated with pesticides. Pesticides can cause cancer and issues with hormone production as well as the endocrine system. They can also irritate your toddler’s sensitive skin.3

How to Choose the Best Organic Pillows for your Toddler

There are so many different options that organic pillows are made from.

  1. The first step is to make sure that the pillow cover is made from GOTS-certified organic cotton.
  2. Next, you need to decide what is the best stuffing for your toddler’s pillow:
    • organic cotton: this is probably the most common choice and is a good comfortable choice to have inside your toddler’s pillow. This is also the easiest type of pillow to care for.
    • organic wool: Organic wool is a great choice for pillow filling. It is healthy, naturally flame resistant, and has moisture-wicking properties.
    • buckwheat hull: Buckwheat hulls are the perfect alternative to plastic pellets. They last a long time and are very supportive, but they can be kind of noisy while you sleep.
    • shredded latex: Shredded latex is very supportive and comfortable to sleep on. It comes from the sap of the hevea brasiliensis tree. It is a great alternative to polyurethane foam. Just make sure that you are buying a pillow made from organic certified latex.
    • organic kapok: Kapok comes from the seed of the Ceiba tree. It has a similar feel to poly-fil but is completely natural and healthy. It usually makes for a very fluffy pillow.

The type of filling that you choose for your toddler basically comes down to cost-effectiveness and personal preference.

The Best Organic Toddler Pillow Options

These are the best organic pillows for your toddler. They are all high-quality, and comfortable and will provide your young child with a healthy, dreamy night’s sleep.

Avocado Green Mattress Toddler Pillow

Avocado Green Mattress makes an amazing toddler pillow. It is more affordable than most of the other organic toddler pillows available. This pillow just looks high quality and very high-end and luxurious.

It is made from GOTS-certified organic cotton cover and is filled with GOLS-certified organic latex and GOTS-certified organic kapok. So it is perfectly soft, yet supportive.

This really is the best pillow. In addition to being GOTS and GOLS certified it also carries with it the Made Safe Certification, which means that it is made from the safest and healthiest ingredients. It is also Greenguard Gold certified. so you can be sure that it will not be releasing VOCs, formaldehyde, or phthalates into the air.

Magnolia Organics

I love Magnolia Organics so much. I have so many of their organic bedding and pillows in my house. They are also very reasonably priced. Magnolia Organics makes the perfect organic pillow because they have so many different stuffing options for you to choose from. And they are all GOTS certified. You can get:

  • Buckwheat pillows: ( just note that the buckwheat hull is listed as size small, instead of toddler, but measures 20 inches x14 inches, which is the same size as the toddler pillow.)
  • Organic Certified Kapok Fiber pillows
  • Organic cotton pillows
  • Organic wool pillows

Magnolia Organics also sells extra material if you want to fill or refill your toddler’s pillow more.

Holy Lamb Organics Child’s First Pillow

Holy Lamb Organics makes one of my most favorite toddler pillows ever. They call it their child’s first pillow. It is the softest and most cuddly pillow a toddler could ever ask for. My older kids still keep these in their beds all of these many years later and will not give them up!

The top layer is a super soft fleece and has a wool moisture-wicking barrier on the backside. The inside is filled with Holy Lamb’s finest eco-wool filling. This pillow is perfectly plush and will provide your toddler with perfect body alignment while they sleep.

This little pillow is completely eco-friendly because it is made from the leftover materials from the other products that Holy Lamb makes. What could be better than that?

Brentwood Home Toddler Pillow

Brentwood Home makes so many amazing organic products for your home. They also make the best organic cotton toddler pillow. It is filled with GOTS-certified kapok and has a certified organic cotton cover. This is such a great option if your children have any kind of skin sensitivities.

The pillow has a medium-firm feel which is perfect for your toddler’s neck alignment and is very comfortable for side sleepers.

White Lotus Home Organic Cotton Toddler Pillow

White Lotus Home handmakes many of their products including their organic toddler pillow. They have a few different options for toddler pillows. All of their pillows are soft filled, and will give your toddler the perfect night’s sleep. They are all made from a GOTS-certified organic sateen cover and have a few different all natural or certified organic options. The options are:

  • Kapok Pillows
  • Organic Cotton
  • Wool Pillow
  • Buckwheat Pillow
  • Buckwool: which has one side of buckwheat hulls and the other side is wool
  • Shredded Natural Latex Pillows

Mother Sheep Organics

Mother Sheep Organics is a family-owned company based in Canada. All of their toddler pillows are 100 percent GOTS certified and handmade.

They have 2 different fill options for their toddler pillows. Either 100% organic wool or organic GOLS certified shredded latex rubber filling. Both pillows are soft and comfortable and completely healthy for your toddler.

Naturepedic Kids Pillow

Naturepedic is such an amazing company for organic certified mattresses and pillows. They make some of my favorite crib mattresses, as a matter of fact, I own two of them.

While they don’t make a toddler pillow any longer, they do make a non-toxic pillow for kids. It is a little bit bigger than a standard toddler size pillow but it is a good option if you are going to be starting your toddler in a twin size bed instead of a toddler bed.

The Naturepedic Kids Pillow is made from a certified organic cotton cover and a PLA filing. PLA is a product made from non-GMO sugarcane and is completely non-toxic. You can choose from standard fill or low standard fill. However, the low standard fill would probably be a more comfortable option for a toddler.

This pillow is also Made Safe Certified and Green Guard Certified.

Lifekind Embroidered Toddler Pillow

Lifekind makes an absolutely adorable toddler pillow. The pillow is 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton filled and covered. Even better than that, that pillowcase is included with the toddler pillow.

Now here is my favorite part, and what makes this the perfect addition to your toddler’s room…the pillowcase comes embroidered with either a sage elephant or a tan whale. They are both so stinking cute, I really don’t know which one I would choose. This pillow is also handmade in the USA.

Make Your Own

If all else fails you can always make your own toddler pillow. Pillows are one of the easiest things to make, especially if you own a sewing machine. After all, who doesn’t love a little DIY project!

Just make sure that you purchase certified organic materials for the cover and the filling. My favorite place to buy organic materials is from organic cotton plus. And if you are looking for an easy toddler pillow pattern, I made this one for my toddlers a few years ago. It is half toddler pillow and half stuffed animal.

Now, where can I find organic pillowcases for my toddler’s pillow?

Finding organic toddler pillowcases is not as easy as finding the organic toddler pillow, however, it can be done. I found a few really good options. Just be sure to check the dimensions of both your pillow and pillowcase to be sure that the fit will work for you.

  1. Avocado Green Mattress: Super luxurious sateen weave, 400 thread count, and GOTS certified. Comes in natural, pink, or blue.
  2. Mother Sheep Organics: 240 thread count GOTS certified organic cotton pillowcase
  3. Holy Lamb Organics: GOTS certified organic cotton sateen. The travel pillowcase measures 14.5 inches x 19 inches and should fit most standard toddler pillows
  4. Brentwood Home: GOTS certified, 400 thread count pillowcase, that is envelope style to keep the pillow securely inside. Also the most affordable case on this list.
  5. White Lotus Home: GOTS certified 230 thread count, sateen cotton. Choices of slip-on cover or zipper cover.

FAQs about Toddler Pillows

Can I use a standard pillow for my toddler?

It is never recommended to use a standard size pillow for your toddler. First of all, it will be too big for their toddler bed and second of all, adult pillows will be too thick and will not provide the proper neck support that your young child needs. They can also be a safety hazard.

Toddlers need a smaller size pillow and one that is designed for them.

When can I start using a pillow with my toddler and are they safe?

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends waiting to introduce your toddler to a pillow until they are 2 years of age. By 2 years old the risk of suffocation lowers drastically and your child is able to easily lift their head and move around comfortably. It is also best to choose a firm toddler size pillow that provides proper neck support.4

How thick should a toddler pillow be?

It is recommended that a toddler pillow should be lightly filled to keep your child’s neck and body in proper alignment. About 3-4 inches is the perfect thickness for a toddler pillow.

Do toddlers need pillows to sleep?

While a toddler pillow is not required, it is definitely recommended. It will help to make your toddler’s bed more comfortable and their sleep even better. It will also help to make their big kid better look even more like an actual bed and not just a crib without sides.

How do I Care for an Organic Pillow?

Caring for an organic pillow will definitely vary depending on what it is filled with. It is always a good idea to use a pillowcase to help protect your pillow and keep it as clean as possible. It is important to follow the care instructions that come with the organic pillow that you purchase to be sure that it lasts a long time. However, many organic pillows are in fact machine washable and can be tumbled dried. Just make sure that is true for your pillow.

My favorite way to refresh all of the pillows in the house, not just my toddlers is to sprinkle them with a little baking soda and then put them out in the sunshine. They come back in smelling so fresh and clean and become super fluffy again!

What about the Little Sleepy Head Toddler Pillow-Organic?

I was recently asked about this particular toddler pillow. While it is made from a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover, I can’t recommend it as an organic toddler pillow. The inside is filled with a hypoallergenic poly cluster fiber filling. While this may be completely safe for your toddler to sleep on, it is not actually organic or natural and I personally prefer to choose natural organic products. Simply because I know they are safe and healthy. I also prefer to avoid anything polyester because it is in fact a plastic product. However, it is completely up to you if this is a pillow that you feel comfortable letting your toddler sleep on.

Choosing the perfect pillow for your toddler is really easy. These certified organic cotton toddler pillows are all really great options and are sure to make your child’s transition into a big kid bed all the more fun and easy!
