Why Should I choose a non-toxic baby bottle?
Whether your baby is going to be drinking baby formula or breast milk from a bottle doesn’t matter. What does matter is what is getting into your baby’s only source of nutrition. Non-toxic baby bottles are made from completely safe materials so that there is no way for the bottle to leach any harmful toxic chemicals into your baby’s milk. Especially if your baby is going to be exclusively formula-fed he or she may be drinking from a bottle many, many times throughout the day- that is a lot of opportunities for your baby to be absorbing unhealthy chemicals into their body.

Are plastic Bottles Really that Bad?
Plastic baby bottles are definitely something that should be avoided at all costs for a few very good reasons.
- They can leach many harmful chemicals. In 2012, THE FDA banned the use of BPA (Bisphenol A) in baby bottles and sippy cups. However very little is known about the alternatives to BPA that are now being used. Many times the replacement is just as bad if not worse than the material it is replacing. So choosing BPA-free plastics may be just as bad if not worse. Plastic baby bottles can also contain and leach phthalates and other estrogen-mimicking chemicals. 1
- Most plastic baby bottles are made from a type of plastic called polypropylene. Polypropylene can release thousands of teeny tiny plastic pieces into your baby’s formula or breastmilk. And even worse heating up your baby’s food to high temperatures directly in the bottle will release even more of these micro-plastics and at a faster rate too. 2
- Plastic tends to be a breeding ground for bacteria. Plastic breaks down over time creating an environment that bacteria love and thrive in.
For these reasons, it is best to select a plastic-free baby bottle for your young children!
Glass Baby Bottle advantages and disadvantages
Glass baby bottles are the most commonly found non-toxic baby bottles on the market and for good reason too.
There are so many advantages to glass bottles that make them a very popular option amongst new parents as well as experienced parents alike.
Here are the pros and cons of glass baby bottles.
Advantages
Some of the wonderful advantages of glass bottles are:
- Glass is odorless
- It is also stain-resistant
- Glass is naturally free from toxic chemicals like lead, BPA, and PVC
- Glass is flavorless so it won’t change the flavor of your little one’s milk
Disadvantages
- The most obvious disadvantage is that glass can break when dropped or with temperature change. However, all of the glass bottles on this list are made from borosilicate glass, which is stronger than regular glass and is also heat and thermal-shock resistant.
Stainless Steel Advantages and Disadvantages
Stainless steel bottles are a great option if you are looking for a durable non-toxic baby bottle for your baby.
Advantages
- Will not leach any type of chemicals
- Durable and won’t break when dropped so they will last a really long time.
- Stain Resistant
Disadvantages
- If you put hot liquids in it or wash it with hot water stainless steel will take on that hot temperature. The same thing will happen with cold temperatures. Although if it comes with a silicone sleeve this is not much of an issue.
- It may give liquids a slight metal or stainless steel type taste.
Silicone Advantages and Disadvantages
Silicone is the perfect and much safer alternative to plastic baby bottles. It is an especially good option if you are looking for a soft bottle that your older baby can get a better grip on.
Advantages
- It is soft and flexible
- Silicone is completely free from BPA, lead, phthalates, and PVC. Specifically, look for food-grade silicone or medical-grade silicone.
- Won’t break when dropped
Disadvantages
- The liquid can take on the taste of the silicone
- Silicone also has a stronger smell, especially when first used

What about non-toxic baby bottle nipples?
When it comes to bottle nipples there are 3 different types:
- plastic nipples: plastic nipples, much like plastic baby bottles, should be avoided completely due to exposure to toxic chemicals. They deteriorate at a fast rate also so they break really easily.
- silicone nipples: silicone nipples are a very good, non-toxic option and are pretty durable
- rubber nipples: rubber nipples are also a really great non-toxic option for bottle nipples and last a really long time
Regardless of which type of non-toxic nipple your baby bottle comes with, always be sure to check it for any kind of damage before feeding your baby!
The Best Glass Baby Bottles
When choosing glass baby bottles be sure to look for borosilicate glass, because it is a very resilient type of glass and won’t easily break when dropped. It is also heat resistant and thermal shock resistant. Here are the 11 best glass baby bottles for your baby.
Lifefactory Glass Baby Bottles
Lifefactory Glass Baby Bottles were the first glass bottles I ever bought for my baby. And after all of these years, I still use and love our Lifefactory bottles. They are made from high-quality borosilicate glass with a colored silicone sleeve, for extra added protection and extra grip. The silicone sleeve comes in a wide variety of really pretty colors, so you can choose whether you want boy colors, girl colors, or gender-neutral colors.
Lifefactory bottles come in either 4 ounces or 9 ounces, The 4-ounce bottles come with a stage 1 silicone nipple and the 9-ounce comes with a stage 2 silicone nipple, that is the perfect flow for 3-6 months. You can also buy the silicone nipples separately if you need a faster or slower flow rate for your baby. You can also purchase the 9-ounce bottles with a flat cap(or just a plastic cap) if you want to store your baby’s bottle in the refrigerator without the nipple or if you are going on a trip and don’t want your baby’s formula to spill everywhere in the diaper bag.
My favorite part of Lifefactory bottles is that the glass and silicone nipples are made in France and the silicone sleeve and top are made in the USA.
Philips Avent Glass Natural Response Baby Bottle
The Philips Avent Natural Response Glass Bottles are the perfect bottle for breastfed babies if you are planning on pumping and don’t want your baby to get used to a bottle that doesn’t make them work. Just for clarification, while many nipples will just drip milk out, these bottles encourage the baby to suck, just like when nursing. The milk will only come out when your baby actively sucks, which is such an amazing feature. This feature will also prevent drips and wasted milk or formula. The silicone nipple is breast-shaped so your baby has a natural latch when using this bottle.
The silicone nipple also has an anti-colic valve built into it to keep extra air out of your little one’s belly.
The Natural Response Bottles come in either 4 ounces or 8 ounces. The 4 oz. bottles come with a flow 2 nipple, which is perfect for 0+ months and the 8 oz. bottles come with a flow 3 nipple, which can be used at 1 month and up. The glass bottles are made with pharmaceutical-grade borosilicate glass. There are 5 different flow rate natural response nipples that can be purchased separately depending on your baby’s needs.
Evenflo Classic Glass Bottles
The Evenflo Classic Glass Bottles are the epitome of eco-friendly bottles. The bottles are made from tempered glass making them super sturdy, but also 100% recyclable when your baby is finished with them. The nipple is made from food-grade silicone and has micro air vents to prevent the nipple from collapsing when the baby is sucking. The bottles come standard with slow flow nipples, however, the medium flow nipple and fast flow nipple can be purchased separately.
The Evenflo Classic Glass bottles come with a really cute and classic twist design making them ergonomic and very easy to hold onto, but also makes them really aesthetically pleasing. You can get them in clear glass, lavender glass, or teal glass. They come in a 4-ounce size and an 8-ounce size and they are compatible with all Evenflo breast pumps so you can pump directly into your baby’s glass bottle. They are also a super affordable non-toxic bottle option! Making them a great option for families looking for the best non-toxic baby products while on a budget!
Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature 3-in-1
The Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature 3-in-1 Glass Bottle has some really neat features and is also the perfect choice for your breastfed baby as well as your formula-fed baby. Much like the Philips Avent Natural Response, the silicone nipple on the Tommee Tippee is also shaped like a breast to encourage your baby to latch on naturally. The nipple also contains an anti-colic valve reducing excessive air intake into your little one’s belly. The glass bottle is made from borosilicate glass like many of the others on this list.
The best part of this bottle is the 3-in-1 feature. When you no longer need it for a bottle it can also convert to a feeding and storage jar, or an open feeding cup. So you are sure to use these glass bottles are a really long time to come.
Nuk Simply Natural Glass Bottle
The Nuk Simply Natural Glass Baby Bottle is another really good affordable non-toxic bottle option. The silicone nipple is also shaped like a mother’s nipple to simulate breastfeeding and also is very flexible and has multiple holes (up to 9) for milk to come out more naturally, similar to breastfeeding. The nipple also has an anti-colic air system to prevent colic and spitting up.
The glass bottles come in 4 ounces, with a slow flow nipple, and in 8 ounces with a medium flow nipple. A fast flow nipple can be purchased separately when your baby is ready for a faster flow.
Haakaa Generation 3 Glass Bottle
The Haakaa Glass Bottle is made from borosilicate glass and is ergonomically designed so it can be held much easier and more comfortably. The silicone nipple is made in a thumb shape to simulate the mom’s nipple and it has a flattened top to allow for proper tongue placement while your baby is sucking. The nipple is intentionally placed off-center allowing your baby to feed in a more upright position since the bottle doesn’t need to be tipped as much as other bottles. The silicone nipple also has an anti-colic vent that prevents unwanted air from getting into your baby’s belly.
This bottle comes in a 3-ounce size, with a small (slow flow) nipple, and a 6-ounce size with a large (faster or variable flow) nipple. The Generation 3 bottle is compatible with all the other Haakaa generation 3 attachments, including silicone sleeves, and even a breast pump.
Naturesutten Glass Baby Bottles
Naturesutten Glass Baby Bottles are made from borosilicate glass in France and the all-natural super-soft rubber nipple is made in Italy. The bottle has an anti-colic double-valve to ensure a more even milk flow that prevents colic and gas.
These bottles come in either a 2 pack of 3.7-ounces or a 2 pack of 8 ounces. And they come standard with a slow flow rubber nipple. A fast-flow rubber nipple can be purchased separately.
Hevea Glass Baby Bottles
I love these Hevea Glass Baby Bottles. If you read my non-toxic bath and water toys post, you know that I already love and highly recommend the Hevea rubber toys. But let’s talk about their glass baby bottles. They are made from German borosilicate glass and a high-quality rubber nipple. You have a choice between a 4-ounce bottle with a slow flow nipple or an 8-ounce bottle with a medium flow nipple. A fast-flow rubber nipple can be purchased separately
Now here is the best part about the Hevea Glass bottles, you have the option of purchasing a 2-in-1 glass bottle with a rubber star ball cover. The very same rubber ball they sell as a toy. It is only available on the 4-ounce bottle but once your baby is done with the bottle the ball is removable and can be played with and is great for teething as well. You have a choice between four colors for the star ball: natural, mint, blue, and peach.
Baby Quoddle Glass Bottle

The Baby Quoddle Glass bottles are 100% plastic-free. They are made from high-quality borosilicate hand-blown glass and hevea rubber nipples. These bottles are made in Malaysia. The nipples are the really interesting part and by far my favorite part. They are made from a soft rubber that is one solid piece. So there is nowhere for bacteria or dirt to hide. Making them a very hygienic option. This is also why they are completely plastic-free.
You can choose between the mini Quoddle, which holds 150 ml or 5.3 ounces and comes with a slow flow nipple, or the able series which holds 300 ml or 10.5 ounces with your choice of a newborn nipple or a medium flow nipple.
I can tell you from personal experience if you are interested in purchasing these bottles for your little one, do it as soon as you see them. They sell out super quickly and can be difficult to find.
Bibs Glass Bottles

Bibs make really cute glass baby bottles. They are made from borosilicate glass and have a natural rubber latex nipple. The nipple has an anti-colic valve allowing air to escape while your baby eats. You can choose between slow flow and medium flow nipples, and I love the cute little heart they have on them. The bottles come as either a set or you can buy mix and match sets to change colors. There is a wide variety of colors and it is hard to choose which one is nicer. But the options are cloud (gray), sage, ivory, blush, blue, and woodchuck (which is a reddish-brown).
Mason Bottle Glass bottles
Do you happen to have any wide-mouth mason jars lying around the house? If you do, this bottle is a great option for you. Even if you don’t Mason Bottle Glass Bottles are still a great eco-friendly, reusable, and affordable bottle option for you. These bottles are so cute and fun. They come with a wide nipple and a double valve ventilation system to prevent colic and gas. The 4 oz and 8 oz bottles come with a slow flow nipple, but you can also purchase medium flow, fast flow, or flexible flow nipples separately.
And if you want to convert your mason jar collection to baby bottles you can just buy the nipple and plastic ring and have your own DIY bottle!!
The Best Stainless Steel Baby Bottles
Stainless steel bottles make a great non-toxic and durable baby bottle option.
Pura Kiki
I love Pura Kiki bottles. When I first purchased mine many years ago, the stainless steel was painted with different color options. Unfortunately for me, the paint chipped and it was hard for me to hand wash them because they would get so hot. Fortunately, they now come with a removable silicone sleeve in a variety of really pretty colors.
Pura Kiki is 100% plastic-free and comes with a medical-grade silicone nipple. The nipple has an elongated anti-colic vent and comes with multiple holes to vary flow rate, which better mimics breastfeeding.
These are the only bottles on the market that are Made Safe Certified. And the best part is all of the pieces are interchangeable so this bottle lasts a really long time. It can transition to a sippy, a straw cup, and a flip-top water bottle. There are also many size options whether you want a 5-ounce bottle, 9 ounces, or 11 ounces and you can choose between a slow, medium, or fast flow nipple.
Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Baby Bottle
Klean Kanteen makes a really simple stainless steel baby bottle, but it is a really great non-toxic option. The bottle is tapered so it is really easy to hold, especially once your baby begins to hold their own bottle.
It has a wide-based, soft, medical-grade silicone nipple that ensures proper oral development and healthy teeth development. The nipple is also double vented to prevent colic and gas. Klean Kanteen comes in a 5-ounce bottle, with a slow flow nipple, or a 9-ounce bottle with a medium flow nipple. You can also buy a fast-flow nipple separately.
Lifefactory Stainless Steel Bottles
The Lifefactory Stainless Steel bottles are the cutest stainless steel bottles I have ever seen. They are wide-neck 8 oz bottles that come with the same silicone sleeve as Lifefactoy glass bottles. The stainless steel bottle is vacuum-sealed and will keep liquids cold for up to 6 hours. The bottle comes standard with a stage 2 silicone nipple. Stage 1 and stage 3 nipples can be purchased separately, You can also purchase a hard spout sippy top to convert your bottle to a sippy cup when your child is ready for the next stage.
You can choose between cantaloupe, stone, denim, desert rose, and mint removable silicone sleeves.
Mason Bottle Stainless Steel Mason Jar
If you are looking for an affordable stainless steel baby bottle, this is a great option to choose. Mason bottle sells a lightweight stainless steel mason jar. It is 12 ounces and comes in pink or green. All of the silicone nipples and plastic rings are purchased separately. They are the same ones used with the glass mason jar bottle.
Thinkbaby stainless steel bottle
Thinkbaby makes a really nice stainless steel bottle that is free from all harmful substances. It comes in some really pretty colors: like pink, blue, green and orange. The bottle is made from medical grade stainless steel and the nipple is made from super soft medical grade silicone. I love how the nipple has a no spill design, keeping all of your baby’s milk inside of the bottle, if it is accidentally tipped over or dropped on the floor. The nipple also comes standard with a anti colic valve. You can shoose between stage A (for 0-6 months) an stage B (for 6+ months).
When you are finished with the bottle it is easily converted into a sippy cup and then the thinkster (which is a straw cup) with the addition of just a few extra pieces.
The Best Silicone Baby Bottles
Choosing silicone bottles for your baby is the perfect non-toxic option if you are looking for a soft yet durable bottle.
Comotomo Silicone Baby Bottles
The Comotomo baby bottle is a super soft silicone bottle. It is probably the most popular brand of silicone bottles available. It boasts a wide neck making it easy to clean and a wide silicone nipple with not one, but two anti-colic vents.
The Comotomo comes in two sizes: 5 ounces with a slow flow nipple and 8 ounces with a medium flow nipple. A fast flow nipple is available as well to be purchased separately. You can also choose between a green or pink bottle. While these bottles are simple they are very nice and very popular.7
Ola Baby Gentle Bottle
The Ola baby Gentle Bottle is an adorable silicone bottle. The actual silicone bottle, and not just the ring, comes in six different colors: mint, coral, sky, rose, frost, and gray. The silicone nipple is off-center to mimic the natural latch of breastfeeding, allowing a more upright feeding and helping to eliminate bottle rejection.
The bottle comes in either 4 ounces with a slow flow nipple or 8 ounces with a medium flow nipple. A fast flow, x cut (for thicker liquids) and a preemie nipple are also available for purchase.
Mason Bottle Silicone Baby Bottle
I love the Mason Bottle Silicone Baby Bottle. For starters, the bottle is made in the USA, which is hard to find for silicone. This bottle has a dual valve ventilation system to prevent colic and gas and is super easy to clean due to its shape. When your child no longer needs a bottle you can turn it into a snack cup by simply removing the nipple. It can also become a squeeze pouch, sippy cup or straw cup when used with the straw attachment that can be purchased separately.
How to Properly Clean Your Baby Bottles
Now that you have chosen the best non-toxic baby bottle for your baby it is important to know how to properly clean your baby’s bottles.
Obviously, always follow the instructions that come with your bottle. But the best practice is to initially sterilize your baby bottle with boiling water before any use. After that, it is best to wash your bottle with your dish soap (non-toxic soap is always best). There is no need for any special kinds of bottle washes or anything like that. A non-toxic baby bottle brush (like this one) is perfect for getting into the hard-to-reach areas and making sure that your bottle is really clean. Many of the bottles on this list are also top-rack dishwasher safe, but again always follow the directions that come with your bottle.
And that’s really it. It is not necessary to constantly sterilize your bottles or to do anything outside of washing them with soap, water, and a bottle brush.
