Why are bouncers so good for babies?

There are three main reasons why bouncy chairs are so good for young babies.

  1. Babies love to feel gentle movements. It keeps them calm and helps them to feel safe and secure. This is because that gentle rocking motion mimics the movements from when your baby was still in the womb. For this reason, babies will stop fussing and crying when a parent or caregiver gently rocks them. And also why a baby bouncer that gently rocks is so wonderful at calming a fussy baby.
  2. The second reason is that it provides you with a comfortable and safe place to put your baby during the day. It is not always convenient to put your baby in their crib, especially if their crib is upstairs and you are downstairs. Also, many times if your little one is awake they won’t enjoy being stuck in a crib anyway, and they would much prefer to bounce in a bouncy chair while being able to see their family around.
  3. The last reason is that the bouncing motion helps to develop your baby’s balance as well as their gross motor skills and hand-eye coordination, especially if your bouncer has a toy bar that encourages your baby to reach up and grab it.

Is it Safe for a Baby to Sleep in a Bouncer?

Whether or not it is considered safe to let your baby sleep in their bouncer during the day is the one million dollar question. It is one of the most commonly asked questions regarding the safety of baby bouncers. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have the simplest answer.

As a nursery nurse, I can tell you that the safest place for a baby to sleep is always in their crib on a firm crib mattress. The CDC recommends always putting your baby to sleep in their crib on his or her back, at both naptime and bedtime. As well as removing any soft blankets and toys. 1

So the answer is no it is not considered safe by the experts for babies to sleep in their bouncers during naptime.

However, I can tell you there are many, many parents who will allow their babies to nap during the day in their bouncers and just keep a very close watch on them. But I do want to reiterate that this is not recommended by either the CDC or the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Baby Swing vs. Baby Bouncer: Which is better?

Trying to decide whether you should choose a baby swing or a baby bouncer for your newborn? The truth is as long as you select a bouncer or swing that is non-toxic it really just depends on what works best for your baby and your home. Both are great for calming your baby during fussy times with gentle movements and will help to keep your baby entertained and engaged. Both are also safe alternatives for your baby to sit in during the day instead of laying flat in their crib.

Advantages of Baby Swings:

  • Swings move around in all directions.
  • They help to develop your baby’s visual perception.
  • They are so much fun and babies can swing for hours!

Disadvantages of a Baby Swing:

  • You can’t put your baby in a swing until they are at least 6 months old.
  • Swings take up a lot more space, and if you are looking for a non-toxic swing, like the ones in this post, they all hang from the ceiling, so they are not as easy to move around as a baby bouncer.

Baby bouncers tend to be much more portable, take up less space, and can be used from age newborn and up.

Why Should I Buy A Non-Toxic Baby Bouncer?

Chances are if your baby is anything like any of my six, soon to be 7 babies, they will love their bouncer so much that they will want to spend a lot of time in there. To keep your developing baby from having constant exposure to harmful chemicals and toxic materials, you will want to choose a non-toxic baby bouncer. A bouncer that is made from high-quality and safe, natural materials that are soft and comfortable all at the same time.

What Should You Look For?

If you are unsure if the baby bouncer you want for your new baby is actually non-toxic here are a few things that you should look for.

  1. Oeko-Tex Certification: When materials are certified to the Oeko-Tex standard it means that “every thread, button, and other accessories, has been tested for harmful substances and that the article, therefore, is harmless for human health”- Oeko-Tex.com
  2. GOTS Certification: A GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards) certification means that your product meets all the requirements to be certified organic.
  3. Base Materials: The base of your bouncer should be made from safe materials that do not off-gas. Materials such as wood or stainless steel are best. Although some plastics such as polyethylene are also really safe.

Toxic Materials to Avoid?

Most conventional baby bouncers will contain toxic chemicals that can have an effect on your baby’s health. All of the following chemicals may be present in baby bouncers and should be avoided for your baby’s health.

  1. Heavy Metals: There are many heavy metals that may be present in your baby’s bouncer, such as aluminum, lead, cadmium, and mercury. They are often used in dyes and present on fabrics. They can negatively affect your energy levels as well as damage the function of major organs.
  2. Flame Retardants: toxic flame retardants are present in polyurethane foam, which is used to cushion many baby products. They are also sprayed directly onto fabrics to decrease flammability. However, they carry with them many health dangers such as cancers, hormone disruption, decreases in brain function, adverse effects on child development, and decreased immune function. 2 Even worse they easily get into dust and the air and accumulate in our bodies.
  3. Volatile Organic Compounds: VOCs are chemicals that evaporate and are then present in the air. They are a known human carcinogen.3
  4. Polyvinyl Chloride: PVCs are a soft, waterproof plastic that may be present in the base of certain baby bouncy chairs. They are known to cause damage to the liver as well as the reproductive system.4
  5. PFAs: Polyfluoroalkyl substances are chemicals that are used to make fabrics waterproof and stain-resistant. They can cause an increase in certain cancers, as well as potential changes to liver function.5

The 10 Best Non-Toxic Baby Bouncers

Here are 10 non-toxic baby bouncing seats that your baby is guaranteed to love. They are all great products that will get a lot of use.

Baby Bjorn Baby Bouncer

The Baby Bjorn Bouncer is one of my all-time favorite baby products. Mine has lasted me a long time and I have gotten many, many years of use from it. My Baby Bjorn bouncer has lasted through 6 babies and is all ready to go once baby number 7 arrives in a few short months.

This baby bouncer comes with a fitted fabric cover that completely supports your baby’s head and neck and a sturdy base made from metal and polyethylene plastic. It comes in a wide variety of materials and many different colors- some being limited edition and only available for a short period of time. I personally chose a certified organic cotton version, but as of right now it doesn’t appear to be available. Hopefully, it will be available in organic cotton again soon. With that being said, given the option between the mesh version or the quilted cotton and 3D jersey version, I would go with the cotton ones, since cotton is a natural material. You can also purchase an additional fabric cover if you need to wash one or if you just want to replace an old one.

Some of the great features that this bouncer boasts is that it is extremely lightweight and perfectly portable, especially if you purchase the optional travel bag, which makes for easy storage. Because it folds down completely it is easy to store anywhere and can be used in three different positions. The lowest position is perfect for the newborn stage and the higher two are better for older babies and will have your baby in a completely upright position. This bouncer can be used from birth up to 2 years old- so you will definitely get plenty of use out of it.

The Baby Bjorn bouncer meets all of the Oeko-Tex safety standards. And the best part about this bouncer is that it has no power outlet and moves with your baby’s movements. So once your baby is able to kick their legs and move around this bouncer will really bounce. Until then, a gentle push every now and then works perfectly.

I also love the removable toy bar that this bouncing seat comes with. It really encourages your baby to reach and grab for it and also helps to develop your little one’s gross motor skills. It comes in a few different choices: a googly face, one with flowers, and one with stuffed bears. In conclusion, the Baby Bjorn bouncer is a great option for your baby.

Nuna Leaf Grow

The Nuna Leaf Grow is another really great choice when it comes to non-toxic baby bouncers. It has so many amazing features that it is hard to know where to start. But the most important part is that is certified to Oeko-Tex standards and comes with a GOTS-certified organic newborn insert. The fabric options are gorgeous and also include some really fun prints that are sure to match any room’s decor. There is also a 3-point harness that is removable when your baby transitions to a toddler chair.

This baby seat is adjustable into 3 positions and locks into place and any recline position. The Leaf Grow has a very calming swaying side motion that will last for up to two minutes with a little push-no power source needed. It also comes standard with a very cute removable toy bar featuring adorable stuffed toys.

Now, this is the best part of the Nuna Leaf. This seat is not just for babies and toddlers, your big kid can use it as well. When used in Stage 2, without the harness, it has a weight limit of 130 pounds! That is a baby chair that is going to be used for a very, very long time.

Finn and Emma Baby Rocker

The Finn and Emma Om Baby Rocker is absolutely gorgeous. It is made from a solid beach wood base and a comfortable cotton insert. This baby rocker has been redesigned to allow so much more use than the original version, which is so great. This rocker can be used in two different positions, as a rocker which is perfect for your newborn baby to relax and lay flat in. Then it can transition into a rocking chair by positioning it upwards. WHen in rocking chair mode it is perfect for toddlers and children up to 8 years old and approximately 50 pounds.

The cotton cushion is machine washable, which is great since it comes in an ivory color. You can also purchase the optional shearling cozy baby pad that makes the rocker even more comfy and cozy. It is made from Australian sheepskin that will naturally wick away moisture and keep your baby happier.

The whole look of this rocker is just so clean and aesthetically pleasing that it is hard to not want it in your living room to just admire the beauty of it and of course, it looks even better with your adorable baby rocking in it.

Finn and Emma Balance Board Rocker

Finn and Emma also make a second rocker. this baby rocker is a 2-in-1 baby rocker and balance board. When your baby outgrows the rocker it can then easily convert to a solid wood balance board that your toddler and child up to 8 years old can use, by simply removing the GOTS-certified organic cotton cushion. Perfect for all of those Montessori families out there!

This Finn and Emma rocker is made from sustainable solid birch and an organic cotton pad. I absolutely love the look of this balance board rocker and I think being able to convert it to a balance board after is such a great creative idea.

The Finn and Emma Balance Board rocker can also be used with the shearling cozy baby pad as well if you are looking for an extra cozy and comfortable place for your little baby.

Bloom Coco Lounger

The Bloom Coco Lounger is another gorgeous wood option. It is very similar to the Finn and Emma Om Rocker, with just some slight differences. This lounger rocks gently with your baby’s own movements. It is made from baltic birch bentwood and comes in your choice of cappuccino, beach house white, or natural wood color.

The chair pad is made from organic cotton canvas and is machine washable. It comes in either white (coconut white organic) or gray (frost gray organic). It comes with an adjustable 5-point harness and is good to use from newborn to 25 pounds.

The Bloom Coco Lounger is free from lead, BPA, phthalates, PVC, formaldehyde, VOCs, flame retardants, and particleboard.

Bloom Coco 3-in-1 Bouncer

Bloom also makes the Coco 3-in-1 bouncer which is the best of both worlds. It has 3 positions: lounging, which lies completely flat, bouncing, which is in a semi-reclined position, and a stationary fixed upright position. This bouncer is different than all the others on the list because this one actually vibrates, from a concealed vibrating unit.

The 3-in-1 bouncer comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns and it is also made from organic cotton. It comes standard with a 5-point safety harness and will fold flat for easy storage. It also comes standard with a travel bag making this lightweight bouncer great for travel. The bouncer comes in a variety of three different color woods: cappuccino, beach white, and natural. There is also an optional toy bar that you can buy separately. They call their happiness bar, which I think is so fun and cheery. It is so stinking cute with a spinning rainbow and circle. It is made from a combination of solid wood and food-grade silicone.

And as always the Bloom 3-in-1 is free from all toxic chemicals and flame retardants.

Stokke Steps Bouncer

The

Charlie Crane Levo Rocker

If you are looking to add a touch of Paris to your living room the Charlie Crane Levo Rocker is the perfect choice for your little one. This one is also very similar to the Finn and Emma rocker and the Bloom Coco Lounger and just as gorgeous and high quality.

The Charlie Crane Levo can be used from birth to 7 months with the 3-point harness and then up to 5 years old when the harness is removed. So you will get a lot of use out of this rocker. It is also adjustable to 2 different positions and comes in many, many colors and stains. I would definitely recommend purchasing the organic nude cushion so that your baby is laying directly on organic cotton, though. The base is made out of beech wood or walnut and uses a water-based varnish.

You can also buy the removable activity arch in either beech or walnut that really adds to the aesthetics of this gorgeous rocker. It comes with 3 hanging wooden toys: a cloud, a circle, and 3 stacked beads. All I can say is that it is simply stunning. There is also an optional sheepskin liner for extra cushion and coziness. It is made from 100% authentic merino sheepskin.

Baby Delight Alpine Deluxe Portable Infant Bouncer

The Baby Delight Alpine Deluxe Portable Infant Bouncer is the perfect choice if you are looking for an organic, non-toxic bouncer for your baby on a budget. It definitely gives you the most bang for your buck. The fabric is all GOTS certified organic, it comes with a neutral removable toy bar as well as a travel bag. It has 3 different reclining positions and folds completely flat for storage.

Much like the Baby Bjorn bouncer or the Bloom 3-in-1 bouncer, it moves with your baby’s movements. It has a 3-point harness making it perfect for babies 0-6 months. The fabric is also completely removable and machine washable if any accidents were to happen. The colors are simple and neutral but very pleasing and they will match perfectly with any living room or nursery decor.

Nomi Newborn Baby Bouncer

The Nomi Newborn Baby Bouncer is very different from all the other bouncers on this list and is unlike anything I have ever seen before. The bouncer seat is an attachment to the Nomi highchair, allowing your baby to join you at meal times or just to gently bounce around. Because your baby is high up off the ground, you no longer have to worry about bending down and breaking your back every time you go to pick up your little one, The bouncy seat is almost completely horizontal creating a safe comfortable space for your newborn and then can be adjusted with into a slightly upright position when your baby gets a little bit older. The bouncy attachment can be used from newborn to approximately 6 months old. When your baby outgrows the bouncer the base can then be transformed into a high chair (with the necessary attachments) and then a big kid chair as well. It can hold up to 330 pounds so you are bound to get tons of use from it!

You have a choice of 4 different color bases: gray, coffee, white or black, and 5 different seat colors: gray, pink, blue, chambray, or denim. And to make it even more varied all of the fabrics are reversible to either white (if you choose gray, pink, or blue) or striped (if you choose the premium colors of denim or chambray)

There is also a removable toy bar that can be purchased separately. The position is completely adjustable allowing your baby to reach it no matter what position they are in. It has the happiest bright yellow sun that is sure to bring a smile to both your and your baby’s sweet face. The Nomi bouncer is completely non-toxic and eco-friendly and free from flame retardants as well as other toxic materials.

Can I use my Infant Car Seat Instead of a Baby Bouncer?

I know it may be tempting to just use your infant car seat as a baby seat. After all, they are easy to remove from the car, you can just hang toys from the handle and it will gently rock-probably not on its own though. Especially if you purchase a non-toxic infant car seat, like one of the ones from my non-toxic car seat post. However, it is not recommended to keep your baby in their car seat for extended amounts of time. Obviously, keeping your baby in their car seats for normal use (i.e, driving around) is perfectly fine, but it is not recommended to keep them in there any longer than that. Besides car seats are not nearly as soft or as comfortable as all of the bouncy seats that are on this list are.
