There are so many great organic and non-toxic Halloween costumes for babies and toddlers that are a much safer alternative to standard costumes. Here are some easy organic baby costume ideas!

It is that time of year again- Halloween! Halloween is such a fun time of year for many parents and young children alike. While it’s no easy feat to find a costume that fits your little one’s needs, finding an organic option can be even more challenging. Here are some super cute organic and non-toxic Halloween costumes perfect for all of your child’s Halloween adventures.

Do I need an organic Halloween costume for my baby or toddler?

The simple answer is No, you don’t need an organic Halloween costume for your baby and toddler. After all, it is just one day a year and most children only wear that costume for a few hours. However, just be aware that many Halloween costumes sold in stores contain many toxic chemicals linked to asthma, birth defects, learning disabilities, and more.

Per EcoCenter.org “HealthyStuff.org tested Halloween products for chemicals based on their toxicity or tendency to build up in people and the environment, including lead, bromine (brominated flame retardants), chlorine (vinyl/PVC plastic), phthalates, arsenic, and tin (organotins).”

You can find some of the Halloween items that they tested here.

If you want to avoid these toxic chemicals coming into contact with your young children, I would definitely suggest choosing a non-toxic Halloween costume for your baby.

Non-Toxic Halloween Costumes: What to Look For

  1. Natural materials: look for outfits made from cotton, wool, or linen. Preferably certified organic cotton, wool, or linen. Avoid any vinyl products.
  2. Avoid costumes that are filled with foam: Chances are if it contains foam it is polyurethane foam and would then contain flame retardants.
  3. Stay away from any cheap-looking plastic accessories: Chances are good they contain phthalates, PVC, and/or heavy metals.

Non-Toxic Halloween Baby and Toddler Costume Options

The best non-toxic costume options are located in the toy section of most stores. My kids love to use dress-up accessories and outfits as Halloween costumes. Full disclosure: I do want to mention that most of the things on this list are made with polyester, which is not my favorite material for my kids to wear but since these dress-up sets go over clothes I am comfortable using them. And again most kids wear costumes for a very short period of time.

Melissa and Doug Role Play Set

Melissa and Doug make some really cute and creative non-toxic dress-up clothes. These are perfect for everyday play and also make some really great costumes. While I am not usually a huge fan of most of Melissa & Doug’s toys, I do use their role-play sets for Halloween a lot. My boys have used their firefighter, fire chief, police officer, pirate, and doctor sets. They are high quality and non-toxic and last a really long time. My 4-year-old has already picked out the magician outfit for this Halloween.

Plan Toys Play Sets

Plan toys make some amazing non-toxic kids toys and they are seriously one of my favorite wooden toy brands. They make some really great playsets for both girls and boys that are a wonderful option to use for your toddler’s Halloween costume this year. While they may not have as many options as Melissa and Doug, they do have some very nice options such as firefighter, spy kit, secret agent, doctor, veterinarian, hairdresser, and construction worker.

Pottery Barn Kids

Pottery Barn Kids also makes some really great costumes that are high quality and completely non-toxic. They have such a wide variety of options from dinosaurs, ghosts, dragons, and princesses. They come in a wide range of sizes to fit your baby’s and toddler’s needs.

Wild Kratts Creature Power Suit

I realize that this one is really specific but I definitely wanted to share it just in case your toddlers love Wild Kratts as much as mine do. This will go down as my kids’ favorite Halloween costume ever. And if your kids aren’t Wild Kratts fans then maybe one of your own child’s favorite characters has a dress-up set too.

Little Adventures

My sister actually introduced me to this family-owned company. They sell so many amazing dress-up outfits that I don’t even know where to start. Seriously, they have Disney-inspired outfits, superheroes, pirates, fairies and the list goes on and on.

Little Adventures said that all of their outfits are free from flame retardants, PVC, and lead.

Organic DIY Halloween Costumes for Babies and Toddlers

If you don’t like any of the organic and non-toxic ideas above that’s ok.

Why not get crafty and make your own organic Halloween costumes this year. You can use any kind of organic cotton fabric to make adorable organic costumes or the clothes that your children already have are also fun to turn into costumes. Just add some safe non-toxic accessories- possibly toys you already have around the house- and you are ready for Trick-or-Treating Fun!

Bonus Points if your child helps to pick out what they need to design their own costume this year!

Non-Toxic Accessories for your Organic Halloween Costumes

While it is important to select an organic and non-toxic Halloween costume for your young children. It is equally important to be sure that the accessories that your child is holding, wearing (or possibly chewing on) are also safe and non-toxic. Here are some of my favorite places to find non-toxic dress-up accessories.

Bella Luna Toys

Bella Luna Toys sells so many high quality organic and non-toxic items that make the perfect accessories for Halloween costumes or just for everyday dress-up play. This is seriously my favorite online store to buy from!

Sarah’s Silks

Sarah’s Silks sells sustainable silk items that come in beautiful colors and are so buttery soft. They come in a variety of sizes so you can use them for just about anything from a cape to fairy wings and even skirts and wands. They also sell really pretty headbands as well that make great dress-up accessories.

Etsy

Depending on the costume that you are making, Etsy can be a great place to buy non-toxic and organic accessories. There are so many wonderful sellers selling beautiful and high-quality handmade products. Just be sure to find out from the seller exactly what the item you will be purchasing is made of.

What about Non-Toxic Trick or Treat Bags?

While we are talking about non-toxic Halloween costumes and accessories, it is also important to mention the bags or containers that your children will be keeping all of their Halloween treat in. Some trick or treat bags may contain lead, flame retardants, and PVC. So it is best to choose a simple, safe option. These are my favorites to use.

  1. Pillowcases: especially nice if your little ones plan on getting lots of treats
  2. Tote Bags: always a nice option because of the long handles and they come in a variety of sizes depending on your needs. I especially love 100% cotton ones.
  3. Baskets (including Bolga Baskets): such a cute option especially colorful bolga baskets. And they can also make the perfect accessory for some costumes.

If you’re looking for organic and non-toxic Halloween costumes this year these ideas should be a great starting point. From Wild Kratts to Disney princesses and lots and lots of options in between I hope that there is something for all of the little on in your life on this list.
