If you are looking for the best baby wet wipes, here are some of the cleanest, organic, and non-toxic baby wipes available.

Parents are always on the lookout for the healthiest options for their babies. Choosing a natural and organic baby wipe is especially important since you will be using them with just about every diaper change. With so many baby wipes to choose from, it can be difficult selecting the right ones for your new little one. I have gone through all the natural and organic baby wet wipe brands and selected only the brands with the safest, purest ingredients. If you are looking for the best non-toxic diapers to go along with your non-toxic wet wipes you can read my non-toxic diapers post here.

Do baby wipes contain chemicals?

Did you know that most baby wipes are made up of a number of toxic ingredients and chemicals? These ingredients include preservatives, fragrances, and irritants. To find the best natural and organic baby wipe for your little one, it is important to read labels carefully. Look out for any of these harmful ingredients.

  1. Parabens: Parabens are added to many products as a preservative. Parabens are endocrine disruptors that can interfere with hormone production and fertility. They can also cause skin irritation and rash from constant exposure. Parabens also accumulate in fatty tissue and will remain there indefinetly. Included under parabens are anything that ends with the word paraben, for example, methylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben, and propylparaben.1
  2. Fragrance: Reading the word fragrance is the same thing as reading the words hidden chemicals, according to Environmental Working Group. It is a well-known loophole that can mean any number of toxic chemicals such as phthalates, PEG-3, PEG-6, titanium dioxide, and some 3,000+ more.2
  3. PEG: Polyethylene glycol is a petroleum-based substance that helps to enhance absorption. There is concern that it can be contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1, 4 dioxane, both known human carcinogens. 3
  4. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate: Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is a foaming agent that is classified as a toxic human irritant. 4
  5. Methylisothiazolinone: Methylisothiazolinone scores a whopping 7 on ewg.org and is a known skin irritant that can activate an immune response causing things like hives, itching, and blisters. It is also a known neurotoxin that has been banned in Canada and the European Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety has stated that there is no safe level. 5

Are baby wipes non-toxic?

The right natural and organic baby wipes are non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and free of toxic chemicals. They are safe to use on your baby from birth and up at every diaper change. These wipes contain simple, gentle ingredients that are soothing and comforting. Organic baby wipes also do not have any harsh chemicals that can irritate your little one’s skin or pollute the planet.

What are the safest baby wipes?

There are so many “natural” brands out there today that are making baby wipes. However, many of them contain ingredients that are not necessary and that you should probably avoid. When in doubt the least amount of ingredients usually is better. There are only a few baby wipes that are actually natural, non-toxic, and safe to use on your baby’s bottom, hands, or face.

Organic and Natural Baby Wet Wipe Brands List:

Here is my list of the best organic baby wipes for your baby.

WaterWipes

Waterwipes are the most commonly known non-toxic and natural baby wipes available. They are made in Ireland and easily found online and in stores. They are also very affordable. I usually use these wipes in a pinch, especially when we are on road trips (see what other non-toxic baby items I like for road trips here) or just to have something to throw into my diaper bag. They are soft and do a really good job to clean up all messes: big and small. Waterwipes uses a 7-stage purification process, that removes any physical and/or chemical impurities from the water used in the wipe.

Do WaterWipes actually clean?

This is a commonly asked question. The answer is an absolute yes. While they may only have 2 simple ingredients with the main one being water, they actually clean really well and never leave anything behind. For most of my diaper changes, I only need 1 wipe and the job is done. Waterwipes are perfect for cleaning sensitive skin and I highly recommend them.

Original Waterwipes vs. Waterwipes Textured Clean

There are two different types of Waterwipes: the original Waterwipes and Waterwipes Textured Clean (they were originally called Waterwipes with Soapberry).

The original Waterwipes have just two simple ingredients: 99.9% water and a drop of Citrus Grandis (grapefruit) seed extract. The grapefruit extract may contain traces of Benzalkonium Chloride. The actual wipe is made from an 80% polyester and 20% viscose blend. These are perfect from birth and up.

The Textured Clean wipes are a little bigger and thicker to improve cleaning power and they also contain an additional ingredient of soapberry extract. In case you are wondering soapberry is a fruit that contains a natural saponin in it and it makes a perfectly natural and gentle cleanser. I actually prefer these wipes because they clean a little bit better and are just as gentle on sensitive skin.
