Why should you buy non-toxic bath and water toys?

Since bath toys need to be soft, squishy, and waterproof they are usually made from some very toxic plastics. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is one of the most commonly used materials. It is cheap to use and easily makes toys soft and pliable-which is why it is used in so many bath toys and many other children’s toys, unfortunately. Besides PVC, water toys can contain phthalates, BPA (Bisphenol A), and lead, also. These chemicals can cause many health problems including allergies, birth defects, cancer, liver toxicity, and immune system impairment-just to name a few.1 Choosing non-toxic bath toys for your child is so important and is a great way to ensure that they are not being exposed to any of these toxic chemicals while playing.

Non-Toxic Bath and Water Toy List

At my house, we have a huge collection of water toys. While we love our wooden toys and I usually try to avoid plastic toys for everyday play, obviously most wood toys don’t do well in water (though there are a couple on this list that are water safe). All of the toys on this list are made from either natural rubber, food-grade silicone, or super-safe plastics. And don’t worry these toys are not just safe and non-toxic they are also a ton of fun!

mushie Stacking Cups

You can’t go wrong with these gorgeous stacking cups. Not only are they a bathtime and water play favorite for my boys they also look so nice sitting out on a shelf as decor. Mushie stacking cups are made in Denmark from 100% BPA-free, Phthalate-free and PVC-free plastic. Stacking cups are perfect for developing fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. These stacking cups come in a couple of different color options such as forest, petal, retro, and the original (this is the one that I have).

mushie Nesting Stars

This is another one of our favorite mushie water toys. The mushie Nesting Stars are so much fun and my boys love to place them all inside of each other over and over again and then take them apart and scoop water. These are also made in Denmark from completely non-toxic plastic. This is a perfect Montessori bath toy because it requires so many different developmental skills. They are also gorgeous and make the perfect decoration for your little one’s room.

Haba Bubble Bath Whisk

What could be more fun than creating tons of bubbles in the water? I’m not going to lie, I do enjoy playing with this bubble bath whisk, with my kids, during their baths. It is made from a non-toxic plastic and comes in either blue or orange. It is the perfect non-toxic water toy if your kids enjoy playing cook in the bath or water table. And every time your child turns the crank at the top they are developing their gross motor skills-what could be better than that?

Haba Bathtub Ball Track

If you are looking for educational bath toys for your toddlers, this fits the bill perfectly. The Haba Bathtub Ball Tracks suction to the wall (so it won’t work for the water table, unfortunately) and your child creates a path for the water and ball to flow down back into the tub. Haba has a couple of different versions of this toy that do slightly different things. It would be so much fun to combine them all together to create an even bigger track.

PlanToys Sea Life Bath Set

PlanToys is one of my favorite go-to toy companies for fun high-quality and non-toxic wooden toys for my children. I just can’t get enough of their water toys, which may be why we have a pretty big collection of them. I absolutely love the bright colors in this sea life bath set that includes a shell, a turtle, a dolphin, and a starfish. My kids have a blast playing with these sea creatures in the water.

PlanToys sea life bath set is made from PlanWood, which is a non-toxic formaldehyde-free compacted sawdust material. I just want to make a note that they do not open but have holes in them for all of the water to come out easily. I have no issue with these drying completely and no issues with mold at all.

PlanToys Boats

PlanToys has a huge collection of boats for waterplay. They have boats with different animals sailing them, like a seal, penguin, or a polar bear. They also sell a submarine and a coast guard boat, and an activity boat as well. All of the PLanToys boats are made from PlanWood and are completely safe for water play. I just make sure to wipe them dry after bath time to keep ours looking nice and new. And I want to be sure to mention that they do actually float in the water!

Honeysticks Bath Crayons

If you have read my blog before you probably already know how much we love our Honeysticks crayons in my house. One of my most popular posts features them as one of the best non-toxic crayons for your babies and toddlers.

Well, they also make a non-toxic bath crayon as well! These are perfect if your child loves to draw in the tub. They are handmade in New Zealand from food-grade colorings, beeswax, and soy wax. These crayons are completely non-toxic and plastic-free. They are also pretty easy to clean off the tub at the end of bath time, although sometimes if my kids drew a little bit harder it does require a little extra elbow grease but rest assured no drawing ever stays behind.

Bannor Silicone Stacking Cups

I can’t make a list of toys without including my favorite, family-owned toy company. Bannor Toys makes beautiful, durable, and safe non-toxic toys for babies and toddlers. I absolutely love their stacking cups that come in a set of 7 different sizes and in such fun bright colors. Because these stacking cups are made from silicone and not plastic like many other stacking cups on the market, they are very soft and flexible so they can be bent without breaking. They are also really fun to stack and promote hand-eye coordination. Bannor Toys Stacking Cups are made from 100% food-grade silicone.

Hevea Rubber Bath Toys

Hevea makes some of the nicest bath toys around. They are perfect for babies and toddlers who love to play with floating water toys. Hevea’s toys are made from natural rubber from the Hevea Brasiliensis tree and are completely plastic-free, PVC-free, and BPA-free. They are handcrafted and hand-painted in Morrocco so each one is unique. Despite being made from rubber they are actually really soft and even make perfect teething toys and they are compostable, so they are very environmentally friendly. Hevea’s toys are free from holes and squeakers so you don’t have to worry about mold. You can choose between whales, ducks, turtles, and frogs.

While not a bath toy, I do also want to mention as a quick aside that if you are looking for a safe, non-toxic bath mat Hevea makes a really high-quality one that has lasted us for a really long time now.

Hevea Star Ball

This is another one of our favorites from Hevea that is also made from natural rubber and so squeezably soft. While I think the star ball is designed to be more of an infant teething/grasping type toy ours seems to find its way into the water quite often. The star pattern of this ball is really cute and it comes in three really pretty colors.

Oli & Carol Floaties

These adorable little bath toys from Oli & Carol are made from natural rubber from Malaysian Hevea trees. They are hand-made and hand-painted with food-safe dyes. They are perfect as teethers and water toys and come in a wide variety of shapes. You can choose from a selection of fruits, and ducks, crabs, turtles, and whales. While they are made in China they are certified non-toxic by Bureau Veritas and are completely free from PVC, BPA, Phthalates, and Nitrosamines.

Oli & Carol Origami Boat

We love our Oli & Carol Origami Boats for water fun! They are very high quality and are such a cute idea. They float through the water and are perfectly safe for babies and toddlers of all ages. Just like all of Oli & Carol’s other bath toys the origami boats are also certified non-toxic and are completely free from holes so you don’t have to worry about mold at all. They come in pink, nude, vanilla, and mint (we have 3 in the mint color).

CaaOcho Bath Toys

These are a really great option for non-toxic bath toys for babies and toddlers. CaaOcho water toys are made from 100% natural rubber and food-grade paints. They are completely free from BPA, PVC, Phthalates, and Nitrosamines. The hole is sealed airtight so you don’t have to be concerned about mold from water accumulating inside. CaaOcho bath toys are the perfect size for little hands and actually float really well.

You can choose between a seahorse, a sea turtle, a whale, or a butterflyfish, who my children lovingly refer to as Flounder (for all of you Little Mermaid fans out there). CaaOcho rubber bath toys are made in China.

Boon Stacking Boats

Boon Stacking Boats are the perfect bath toy for all of those boat lovers out there. It is a set of 5 different size boats that float perfectly in the water and are completely stackable to reinforce hand-eye coordination. My boys have so much fun with these, especially at their water table outside. They love to try to race their boats to see which boat will win (but just know they don’t actually move on their own). These are a super affordable option if you are on a tight budget and can’t afford some of the more expensive non-toxic water toy options. The Boon stacking boats are made from plastic, but are free from BPA, PVC, and phthalates. They are made in China.

BeginAgain Bathtub Pals

BeginAgain is known for its rubberwood toys, so I was very surprised to learn that they made natural rubber bath time toys. They are completely non-toxic and free from BPA and phthalates. These bathtub pals have large openings so water drains out easily and they are also dishwasher safe making them easy to clean. The BeginAgain Bathtub Pals comes as a complete set of 6, which includes a shark, a pufferfish, a sea turtle, an octopus, a crab, and a diver.

Tikiri Ocean Buddies Rattle

The ocean buddies from Tikiri are some of the cutest bath toys ever! They come in the prettiest colors and too many cute animals to even list here. But some of my favorites are the turtle, the octopus, the lion, the seahorse, and the puppy. They are all handmade in Sri Lanka from GOLS-certified natural latex and are super soft. To make these little water toys even cuter they all have a rattle enclosed within them to make them fun as baby teething toys as well. They are so much fun for bath time and did I mention that they are just so stinkin’ cute?!

Green Toys Seaplane and Seacopter

The Green Toys Seaplane and Seacoptor are two of my boys’ favorite non-toxic bath toys that we own as well as a favorite for out-of-water play as well. They have been in our water toy rotation for years and never fail to bring a smile to my children’s faces! Like all Green Toys, they are made from 100% recycled plastic milk jugs and are completely lead-free, BPA-free PVC-free, and Phthalate-free.

Green Toys Ferry Boat

How fun is this ferry boat with its mini cars?! The Green Toys Ferry Boat is a super popular non-toxic bath toy and for good reason. It’s not only cute but also really high quality and easy to clean and take apart without the worry of mold or mildew inside. I guess I could list out most of the Green Toys line on this list just because there are so many fun options, but I will stop with just these since they are favorites in my house. And yes the ferry floats nicely above water and the cars can go inside.

Lanco Rubber Duck

If you and your children love rubber ducks especially ones that come in super fun and interesting designs, Lanco Rubber Ducks may be exactly what you are looking for. They are completely non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and biodegradable. These rubber duckies are made from the sap from organic rubber trees and then they are hand-painted with vegetable dyes and are free from all heavy metals. All of Lanco’s ducks are sealed so you don’t have to worry about mold either.

Lanco has so many different rubber ducks it is hard to choose which ones are the most fun! We have the rowboat and snorkeler rubber ducks at our house and my kids keep asking for more. So if you enjoy rubber ducks too definitely take a look at all of the creative non-toxic options that Lanco makes.

Marcus & Marcus Bath Toys

Last but certainly not least, let’s talk about the bath toys from Marcus & Marcus. These toys are made from high-quality 100% non-toxic food-grade silicone and are completely free from BPA and Phthalates. They are super easy and convenient to keep clean since they are dishwasher safe and they come as 2 detachable pieces. Leaving no room for mold to hide anywhere. Marcus & Marcus silicone water toys come in a few different designs. You can choose between a rocket ship, a submarine, a seaplane, or a set of animals.

All of the toys can squirt water which always makes water play so much more fun! Also, another added bonus to these fun toys is that they are heat sensitive and will change color if the water is too hot!

Organic Washcloths (bonus!)

This may seem like a silly one to list but once I am done cleaning my kids with their washcloths, they fight over who gets to play with them. I love to watch their imaginations run wild with such a simple thing and since washcloths are something that almost everyone already has I figured I would add it as a little bonus. I love these washcloths. You could also use these fun 100% organic cotton washcloth puppets that come in different animals.

How to Keep Your Non-Toxic Bath Toys Clean and Free From Mold

You are probably wondering the best ways to keep your child’s non-toxic bath toys clean.

  1. The first tip is to try to choose toys that are easily drained to prevent any mold growth on the inside. All of the bath and water toys on this list are easy to keep mold-free. There is nothing worst than when your child goes to play with their water toy the next time and a bunch of mold squirts out at them. Always make sure that all water toys dry thoroughly. Whenever I can I like to put my kids water and bath toys out in the sunshine just to help clean and dry them.
  2. Depending on the toy (always check the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions), some are safe to clean in the top rack of the dishwasher. I always put all of my silicone and plastic toys right in the dishwasher when necessary.
  3. However, if you don’t have a dishwasher or you are not comfortable cleaning toys in your dishwasher a simple way to get a complete clean is to make up a solution of 4 parts water to 1 part vinegar and either spray it on or submerge the toys in the solution. White vinegar is one of the best all-natural cleaners around and will kill anything your toy may have on it or in it.

There are so many wonderful and fun non-toxic bath toys to choose from, it can be hard to decide. Whether you choose one made from wood, natural rubber, food-grade silicone, or safe plastic you can’t go wrong. There are even some educational and Montessori-based water toys if that floats your boat (no pun intended). I hope this guide has helped you narrow down your options or that it inspires you to try a new toy! Which of these water-safe bath toys is the best for your little one? Have any favorites?
