What is an Organic Crib Mattress and Why Should You Choose One for Your Baby?

Simply put an organic crib mattress is a crib mattress made from 100% organic materials. It is really important when buying an organic crib mattress that you check to make sure the whole mattress is certified to the GOTS and GOLS certification standards-but I’ll talk more about this later.
Your baby’s crib should always be the safest place for them in every way possible. That includes a mattress free from toxic chemicals and made from only safe, natural, and non-toxic materials.

Is an Organic Crib Mattress really necessary?

Choosing an organic mattress for your baby is absolutely 100% necessary and one of the single most important things that you can buy for your baby. Conventional mattresses (i.e. non-organic crib mattresses) are filled with all sorts of toxic chemicals that are known to be unhealthy for everyone, but especially for babies. Since babies have smaller bodies and immature immune systems and respiratory systems they can’t handle an increased toxic load the way an adult can.

In a study done at the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Brandon E. Boor found that:

crib mattresses released nearly 30 different types of volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, and other potentially harmful airborne chemicals such as endocrine-disrupting phthalates and fragrance allergens. 1

When the Environmental Working Group interviewed Dr. Boor about his findings, he also stated:

“A baby’s exposure to chemical contaminants in their crib mattresses can be amplified since they sleep for 12 to 14 hours every day and inhale air just inches above the mattress surface, where the concentrations of the VOCs can be about twice as high as standing just a few feet away,” he said. “Their body heat also increases VOC emissions.” 2

This is why it is so important to be sure that your baby is sleeping on a certified organic mattress that is guaranteed to be free from any harmful toxic chemicals. And why anytime you can buy organic and non-toxic baby products you should. It is so important that we as parents do everything we can to protect our babies from anything that could potentially harm their health.

In addition to harmful VOC emissions, phthalates, and fragrances, conventional crib mattresses also contain flame retardants that can accumulate in your baby’s body with repeated exposure and cause various health problems later in life. There was even a study done using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in January 2020 connecting exposure of flame retardants early in life to decreased neural development.

“PBDE (chemicals from Flame Retardants) exposure was the greatest contributor to intellectual disability burden, resulting in a total of 162 million IQ points lost and over 738,000 cases of intellectual disability.” 3

How do I know if a crib mattress is actually organic?

The only way you can actually be sure that the crib mattress you choose for your baby is 100% organic is to look for organic certifications. GOTS (Global Organic Textiles Standards certifies materials such as cotton and wool) and GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standards for latex) are the most commonly used for organic crib mattresses. If the crib mattress contains both latex and cotton and/or wool it should contain both certifications.

But having the right certifications is just the beginning. You also need to know exactly what is certified.

For example, a crib mattress may have a certified organic cotton cover but the rest of the mattress is not organic at all. Since the cover is certified to GOTS standards the crib may be listed as being GOTS certified organic-which is unfortunately not completely true. It is important to make sure you know exactly which parts of the crib carry the certifications.

You also want to be aware of the common practice of greenwashing-where a company will list claims such as “organic” “non-toxic” or “eco-friendly” without actually having a product that is non-toxic, or organic, or eco-friendly. This is why doing as much research as possible about a company and its products is so important.

With that being said, the 6 organic crib mattresses on this list are completely GOTS and GOLS certified and are all high-quality mattresses, making them the best organic crib mattresses available today.

What is the Best Organic Crib Mattress?

Well, I am so glad that you asked! There are so many amazing organic crib mattresses available now. I chose ones that are completely certified and also very affordable…with all of them right around the $300 mark and some of them within the $200 range!

Naturepedic

Naturepedic is by far one of my favorite organic mattress companies. They have such amazing organic mattresses all made by hand in the USA. All of their materials are GOTS certified, GOLS certified, and Made Safe Certified. While they have a lot of different options available for crib mattresses I am going to focus on the 2 most affordable options they sell.

Naturepedic Classic Lightweight

This is one of the most affordable organic mattresses that you can purchase for your baby. It is a firm yet comfortable mattress that features organic cotton batting and a “WavesupportTM Core” which is a lightweight GOLS foam core that Naturepedic has developed to make this mattress lightweight for easy crib sheet changes. And trust me at 10 pounds this mattress is super lightweight!
If you are trying to avoid metal innersprings this is the best mattress you can find at this price point. I do want to point out that you also have the option to get this crib as a 2 stage mattress as well-if you prefer having a newborn and toddler side.

Another great benefit of Naturepedic crib mattresses is that they feature a waterproof top layer that is a coating made from non-GMO sugarcane and it extends all the way to the seams so you don’t have to worry about any leaks getting anywhere on your crib.

Naturepedic Classic Innerspring

I actually own 2 of these crib mattresses and my 2 youngest boys are currently sleeping on them right now. I can tell you with complete confidence that your baby will love this mattress as much as all of my children have. This mattress is comfortable and bouncy while still being safe and firm. The Naturepedic Classic Crib Innerspring Mattress comes as a 2 stage mattress with one side firmer for infants and the other side a little softer for older babies and toddlers.

This mattress has all of the same features as the Classic Lightweight Mattress above except that it has an innerspring core and instead of only weighing 10 pounds it weighs 19 pounds.

My Green Mattress Emily

My Green Mattress makes great organic mattresses also by hand in their certified organic factory in Illinois, USA. While I never used this crib mattress in particular I do own 2 of their twin mattresses, which I absolutely adore and my older boys find very comfortable. So this is another company that I love and fully stand by.

The Emily Crib Mattress has some really great features. It is made from certified organic cotton and organic wool (making it naturally flame resistant) wrapped around an innerspring core. The outer layer is a layer of organic coconut coir infused with organic latex making this crib breathable and comfortable as well.

Both sides of this crib are upholstered so you can flip it to either side. However, unlike Naturepedic, both sides of the mattress are the same firmness. This crib mattress weighs a little over 15 pounds.

Saavy BabyTM Organic latex mattress

If you are looking for a high-quality organic latex mattress this is a really great option. The Savvy BabyTM crib mattress is manufactured in a GOTS-certified facility in the USA from a 5-inch piece of natural Dunlop that is GOLS certified and meets the USDA organic standards as well. They also use certified organic wool batting as a natural flame retardant and an organic cotton casing. This would make a really great high-end baby mattress for your nursery.

Avocado green Crib Mattress

The Avocado Green Crib Mattress has such a super luxurious feel to it. This mattress is handmade in Los Angeles, California from the highest quality materials: GOTS certified organic cotton and wool and certified GOLS latex. This mattress comes in 2 different levels. One side is firmer for infants and the other side is the perfect level of firmness for toddlers.

In addition to being made from GOTS and GOLS certified organic materials, the Avocado Green crib mattress is also Made Safe Certified. This means that it is guaranteed to be made from materials that are good for the environment and will not harm the health of humans, animals, and ecosystems. The price of this mattress is a huge bargain for such a high-quality product!

Soaring Heart Organic Latex Crib Mattress

The Soaring Heart Organic Latex Crib Mattress is handmade in Seattle, Washington using the finest materials available. The Soaring Heart Crib Mattress is made from GOTS certified organic cotton from Texas, GOTS certified organic wool sourced from New Zealand, and GOLS organic latex. This may be the most expensive mattress on this list but it is worth every penny of its cost.

Organic Mini Crib Mattress

In case you have decided on a mini crib and are looking for a recommendation for an organic mini crib mattress, I’ve got you covered!

Naturepedic Mini Crib Mattress

The Naturpedic Mini Crib Mattress is the perfect pick for an organic mini crib mattress because not only is it handmade from the highest quality GOTS and GOLS certified materials it is also breathable as well allowing for temperature regulation and a much happier baby.

This mattress features “Naturepedic’s WaveSupportTM technology” at its core and weighs in at only 8 pounds!
The Naturepedic mini crib mattress is designed to fit standard mini cribs, and measures 23.5 inches x 37.5 inches x 3 inches. But definitely measure your mini crib to make sure that this mattress will fit snugly into your mini crib before you purchase it.
